Thursday July 1, 2004 – “Finish, Test and Run”
Crew: Don Mullen & Caleb

One last fitting to install on the water pump saved from the old pump for 5/8” ID raw water intake. Install takes 20 minutes. Don and I test the engine under load in Hempstead Harbor. She is gulping water yet again!

Around 14:00 we decide to make a run for Huntington Harbor. Phone calls were made and a mooring was secured and we were off. With SW winds off Matinnecock Point the GPS gave readings of 7.5 knots. The tide was ebbing and helping us with its current. I also noticed that the propeller was spinning as we were plowing through the water. Was that supposed to happen? I was enjoying a nice sail so that could wait.

Afraid of a TsunamiWe buzzed the Sand Hole and passed Caumsett State Park with Eatons Neck off in the distant haze of Summer. We got close enough to shore to make out the beach at the bottom of my sister’s road on Lloyd Neck. We rounded into Huntington Bay and inside Lloyd Harbor we anchored around 18:00. A beautiful orange sun hung near the horizon with only an hour more of daylight to go. We watched a sailboat race start in front of us while enjoying the moment. Caleb’s sister Melisa met us at the Huntington Yacht Club and fed us and plied us with drink, conversation and sleep which we needed not necessarily in that order.
