2004 – August 3rd & August 9th
Tuesday
August 3, 2004 – “Couples Sailing #1”
Crew: Matt, Laurie, Caleb and Jessica
We all met on the boat around 1330 with little prospect of wind. Before
setting out we ate our lunch in the hot August sunlight. We set off
towards Hart Isle where the wind dissipated off its eastern shore so
we headed back West into a field of 5 knot Southwesterly breeze. We
then sailed under the Throggs Neck Bridge and back out into Douglaston
Harbor and finally back to Steppingstone. We had covered maybe 8 miles
with the knotmeter rarely showing above 5 knots. A bottle of red wine
was consumed and we all enjoyed a fairly untaxing sail.
This was to be the first of our Tuesday sails. We decided to play hooky
from our various quotidian occupations on land and enjoy the relatively
empty waters during the normal workweek. It was a treat for Laurie who
was normally stuck at home with their two young children and it was
a treat for us men to find that our wives enjoyed this pastime we had
been pursuing, sometimes despite our wives’ wishes. Now they understood
the pull of getting out on the water.
Monday August 9, 2004
Noah got out on Odalisque this day and ran the bilge, cleaned up the
galley and organized much of the gear we had lying about the cabin.
A
photo of sunset over the Bronx as seen from our mooring at Steppingstone.
A picture may be worth a thousand words but it can never really capture
the feeling of actually being there.
