Haulout and beyond

“Haul out or hurry up and wait”

Matt took the boom off the mast and motored Odalisque in to the NBC dock. I met him there. We had a very comfortable day waiting to be pulled out onto our cradle. I convinced Matt that we should disconnect the aft stay before the crane pulled us up. Several other owners had done this knowing that the top arm of the crane would bang into the aft stay as I had noticed happened to Odalisque the first haul out at NBC. The haul out committee was happy to hear that our mast is keel stepped and that we should not worry.
Eventually we were hauled and blocked in our cradle although there was a cant to port and dip to stern. An extra set of blocks had been placed under the bow portion of the cradle that was not copied under the stern. We were unhappy about the way Odalisque was sitting in her cradle. Standing water could freeze on the decks and in the cockpit.
We reconnected the aft stay and then we took the sails, PFD’s, boats cushions and most of the other gear that was not attached to the boat back to Matt’s garage. I had drained the engine oil from our A4 while it was being hoisted by the crane but was unable to put new oil in as the cabin was a mess and I could not find the gooseneck funnel.
On a subsequent visit I messed with the cradle and blocks and took out a lot of the cant or tilt to the hull as she sat in the cradle. It took some turning of the jack stands and my car jack under the hull to help reposition her more comfortably in her cradle. I was able to find the gooseneck funnel and added new oil to the engine. I also fixed the in boom outhaul whose wire had jumped its sheave (block) and would not budge at all until now.
Still to be done was the issue of the bilge pump not working and to build a winter tent or cover.

“Finish up”

The water in the bilge was still frozen by the time we got to it even though it had warmed up into the 50s. It had been below freezing at night. We determined that ice was not the optimal fluid (nor a fluid at all) for the pump and so abandoned fixing the pump. The electrical conduit sections went up and then the tarps. She had a nice blue tent riding over the topsides. Many projects to do in the spring before re-launching:
- bilge pump
- water pump drain plug
- “T” fitting spring replaced
- new thermostat, gasket, and water hose
- countless other little and big things
